Neural Control of Movement: 1) Intro

Open up a word doc about the nervous system in the shared server in my folder. Choose one of the topics, read the article(s), research it further/more in depth, and post a comment here that contains 1)title/topic 2)summary 3)how it's relavent to someone's "real" life

-Amputees 'feel' lost limb-
This article talked about how someone who had a limb amputated could feel things with their limb. They rerouted through the chests of patients nerves that transfered the sensation from the hand to the brain. They could feel heat and cold and physical pressure. When someone felt somthign on their chest they woudl feel it on thier fake limb.

Will Anyone Ever Run A 3 Minute Mile?

This article shows how over the years people have become faster at running and have been able to maintain speeds for distances to make track records drop year by year. Records show that people are getting faster and the key to faster movement, is quicker muscle contractions. Studies have shown that healthy diets and special footwear can only do so much for a human and there will be a point reached where no one can run any faster.

This is good for people to know because it just shows that people will only be so fast. They will never be as fast as a cheetah (70mph), or a lion (50mph), and many other animals. Humans are considered slow and they will never get to those speeds no matter what they do. Hard work, good genetics, up to a point nothing more can be done

1)Will anyone ever run a 3 minute mile?
2)This is article talks about making man runa faster and break a 3min mile. They say it is possible if we had bigger hearts, more mitochondria and more blood vessles we could run around 40mph.But we will endure the same illnesses of race horses like bleeding lungs and fractured legs.
3)this article tells people that it is pretty impossible for humans to ever be able to run a 3 minute mile they predict that in the year 2040 the fastest mile could be 3min and 29secs.

Will Anyone Ever Run A 3 Minute Mile?

It is very difficult for a human to run at a speed of 25 mph. Track and Field records are being broken today because the runners are better trained and more in shape. A good diet and a pair of running sneakers can only do so much. In 1987 a researcher predicted that in 2040 the record for a mile would be 3 minutes 29.84 seconds. The article said that the key to running was to have muscles contract faster and give them as much oxygen as possible. Having more mitochondria would help a human because they could then process more oxygen. However, they have not found a way to make this happen yet.

1)Sleeping, dreaming, and nerves
2)Both of the articles described the two different sides of the argument over whether dreams our signifigant or not. The side that said they were not signifigant blamed dreams on strong, regular, nerve bursts. The bursts originate at the base of the brain, activate nerve cells throughout the brain, bringing forth images, sensations, and feelings. The idea is that the brain takes what is essentially random, meaningless nerve activation and "synthesizes" something that has some meaning and coherence, even if it has to resort to making up its own story. The other side argues that the brain brings back things from your subconscience and formulates them into a dream of a sort. Also the article talked about how the brain will replay things or learning activities that happened throughout the day almost as if consolidating a memory while sleeping.
3)This would be relevant to peoples lives because they may be able to learn faster if scientists can figure out how to control the brains consolidating of memories. Or people may be able to figure out whether their dreams are signifigant or not to their daily lives and if they mean anything.

Sports Medicine Mericals

This article is about stem cell research. It states that doctors that freeze and store stem cells say that they might be usefull further down the road. This articl also styates that there is much more research that needs to be done in order for this to become a reality. This article then states what the stem cells can do. such as be turned into a wide varity of tissues and also help and shorten the rehiblation and healing times of injurys or surgerys. it also states that some athlets have already gone forth with the stem cell transplants without the research. the article also states that even if they were to get the tissue to grow outside of the body they would still be challanged with the task of getting in place. there is also another challange of seeing if the body will accept the new tissue. with these uncertenitys researchers and th FDA are not allowing there to any human supplments in the near future. it may take such time for that like in five years they might think of trying out the suppliment on humans.

With this information and technology, it could impact professional sports. it could do this by increasing an athlets career by years if not decades. this could also help with the healing process that millions of people go through every. it could speed up the healing process and get people back to jobs, to their familys, and ultiatly back to their lives faster.

"How Thinking Can Change the Brain"
This article is about neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to change structure and function in response to experience) and the investigation into if the mind can shape the brain. It is a well known and accepted theory that what the brain changes the mind. This is because the brain gives rise to hopes and emotions.
The Dalai Lama was wondering if the mind could shape the brain; that is, the mind changes the physical structure of the brain. If so, then pure thought could change the brains activity or the structure and circuits.
This theory was tested using monks and lamas to try to prove that meditation impacted the way the brain worked in a positive way. The researchers tried to prove that meditation and other such mental processes lead to "enduring changes in the brain."
The first group that was tested was a group of "adepts" (with 10,000+ hours of meditation experience). These subjects were hooked up to a lectroencephalograph (records brain waves) and asked to begin meditation. When they began to meditate, one type of brain wave grew exceptionally strong- the gamma wave. These waves are believed to knit together "far-flung circuits", in a sense; consciousness. These waves normally appear when the brain brings together sight, sound, and feeling in a eureka moment.
The other group of subjects were less experienced monks. When they were tested, they showed a “slight but significant” increase in gamma waves.
On their own, these results aren’t astounding. One would expect that a corollary would exist between meditation and brain waves. The big discovery of this study is that after both groups of subjects were asked to cease meditation, the more experienced group of monks showed no decrease in the gamma waves being produced. The more experienced the monk was at mediation, the stronger the gamma waves were when they weren’t mediating.
The brains of the more experienced mediators were more likely to be marked by waves associated with perception, problem solving and consciousness. It was also shown that the more experience the monk had, the stronger and longer lasting the gamma signal was.
The subjects were then subjected to an fMRI. This test would allow the researchers to see what parts of the brain were experiencing activity during the meditation. The parts of the brain that lit up were also interesting. The monks all showed increased activity in the network that underlies empathy and maternal love. Their frontal regions (which control emotion) were also more developed.

This study shows that through positive thought and work, someone can become a happier person, or rehab from a debilitating injury or disease.
